Loud Furnace Problems
Loud furnaces are not only irritating, that noise could be an indication that there is a problem. Different noises can point to different problems with the heating system.
One of the biggest reasons the furnace may start whistling is a clogged filter. When the filter becomes clogged, the furnace will try to suck air from wherever it can. Any spaces or holes in the furnace filter can make a whistling sound if air is being sucked through them. Replacing the filter every three months can help prevent this from occurring.
Loose ducts are the most likely cause when the furnace is putting off a rattling vibration type noise. Securing the loose ducts with extra screws and duct tape can usually solve the issue.
If a banging noise occurs when the furnace turns on, it is likely to be one of two issues. The ductwork could be flexing when the pressure changes or it could be a small explosion called an ignition roll-out.
If the furnace is making some loud, unfamiliar noises when it gets turned on this season, give Diamond Heating and Cooling a call. They can get to the root problem and get the furnace system running smoothly, and quietly, again.
Getting Rid of the Musty Furnace Smell
With chilly mornings in the Treasure Valley, some might be turning on their furnaces. They might also be experiencing a musty smell when it kicks on for the first time in months. This is because over the months of not being used, the furnace accumulates dust, dirt and even mold.
Usually some cleaning and a filter replacement can get rid of the smell. The HVAC system should be cleaned every so often to get rid of the dust and dirt that accumulate. To clean the furnace, follow these steps:
- Vacuum around the entire unit
- Turn off power to the unit and open the front chamber door
- Vacuum the burners (if gas) and the blower compartment
Filters should be replaced at least every three months. Clogged filters can drastically reduce the life of the furnace and cause it to use more energy. One trick to remember when it’s time to change the filter, or to remember when it was changed last, is to mark the date somewhere on the filter.
If the furnace has been neglected for a while, it might be time for a professional cleaning. There could be years of dust and debris in the furnace system that needs to be cleared out. While cleaning, professionals can also inspect the system.
To keep that musty smell at bay, schedule routine maintenance with Diamond Heating and Cooling. They can clean and maintain the system to keep it fresh and working properly. Ask about their maintenance plans and Silver Club Membership. It can help homeowners save on furnace maintenance.
Installing a Heat Pump
A heat pump is a great way to heat and cool a home more efficiently. It could help homeowners save a considerable amount of money in energy costs.
These devices use a small amount of energy to move heat from one location to another. They pull heat out of the air or ground to heat a building, but they can also cool a building down. Instead of drawing heat and bringing it inside, it draws the heat from the home and transfers it out.
The action of transferring heat uses much less energy than creating heat, which is why people see such savings on their energy bills when they switch to a heat pump. In most cases, a heat pump can replace the HVAC system. However, in places that see extreme temperatures, homeowners might want to keep the HVAC system around as a backup if it gets too cold or too warm.
