Radon – A Little Known Indoor Air Pollutant
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas that though it occurs naturally, can cause major problems. It comes up from the ground and can cause serious health risks. Many homes and buildings have been built directly on top of radon emitting rocks such as phosphate or granite. While radon is present in nearly all air, the level outdoors is typically extremely low and not known to be hazardous to human health. However, the amount of radon inside homes can get to dangerous levels. This indoor air pollutant can cause lung problems ranging from thickening of certain tissue types to lung cancer with long term exposure.
While many people have a new home tested as part of the pre-purchase inspection process, it’s recommended that homeowners get their homes tested periodically as cracks in the foundation or basement that can occur over time, will increase the amount of radon able to enter the home. Many people are unaware of what the radon reading actually means. A level below 2 pCi/L is considered safe, homes with a level between 2-3.9 pCi/L should consider treatment and a level above 4 pCi/L requires immediate treatment to ensure safe air in the home. Research has shown that levels are highest close to the ground and in basements and that the longer the exposure, the greater the chance for a more serious issue such as lung cancer, hence children are especially at risk.
Radon is fairly simple for a homeowner to address. A professional will need to come install a radon mitigation system in the home which will reduce the amount of radon in the home to a safe level and will then provide constant monitoring of the level allowing the homeowner to be sure that it is staying below the recommended amount. According to data collected by Air Chek, Inc ,24% of homes tested in Ada county were found to be above the level considered to be dangerous, another 38% of homes were in a higher then recommended level where treatment is not required but is often still recommended. So this is a widespread problem throughout the county. Like all indoor air pollutants radon is something to be monitored and taken seriously.
